It is essential to be able to change quickly and adapt to new market logics. Think about how quickly the live shopping wave emerged during the COVID lockdown period. It became an indispensable technology for many webshops, but it was much easier to get started for those who had the right foundation. That foundation is a platform consisting of microservices and APIs. This means that every major function in your webshop – e.g., your CMS or PIM – can be changed without altering all the other parts. Each function is called a Microservice or Packaged Business Capability, and these are connected to each other through APIs. APIs and the openness of the systems you choose are crucial. For example, we use RESTful APIs with complete Swagger documentation, ensuring simple integration. This makes it simple to quickly incorporate new technologies like live shopping.

The reason for choosing an interchangeable foundation is that it enables you to always choose the most suitable solution. All the terms have different definitions, but they fundamentally cover the same thing. Composable commerce provides greater freedom, but it unfortunately also comes with a price – and that price can be high complexity and total confusion. In 2023, Chiefmartec counted Martech systems in the market and arrived at 11,038 different systems. This means that it quickly becomes difficult to evaluate, select, and integrate all the different systems you want to build your shop from. Additionally, not all systems integrate equally well with each other and can cause problems during updates. This is the nightmare scenario for total composable commerce.
